Artist Statement

I began University making figurative drawings informed by traditional artists such as Michelangelo and Da Vinci. My practice was focused on observing the human form, and representing the female form from a female perspective. However, my practice has since transitioned into digital photo collage, merging tradition with present-day practices.

I am interested in reworking traditional works, and collage artists such as John Stezaker and Annegret Soltau inform my work. My series of photo collage, titled Stargazing, reworks traditional paintings, combining them with photography, and merging two different subjects into one. I play with fragmenting and merging identity—vandalizing the original artwork’s narrative. My work references tradition, giving it relevance to modern digital art. I entice the spectator to consider the relation between painting and photography, man and woman, and the male gaze within art.

Drawing upon ideas from Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, I am interested in the ‘self,’ the ‘ego,’ and the ‘other,’ exploring themes of identity within my work. John Berger’s Ways of Seeing has theoretically informed my practice, resulting in reworking traditional artworks to comment on societal perceptions; how we view ourselves and others in the world.

My aim for future work is to focus more centrally on the ‘self,’ developing my practice into that of autobiographical works, such as my most recent work titled Remembrance.
